Thomas Lyte, a company renowned for its expertise in crafting exquisite trophies and silverware, was honored to be selected as the Makers of the Aegon Championship Runner Up Trophy in 2009. This prestigious task was not only a testament to Thomas Lyte’s exceptional craftsmanship but also a recognition of its standing in the world of luxury trophy making.
The trophy, a masterpiece of design and craftsmanship, was the brainchild of Haruka Usui, a talented designer from the Glasgow School of Art. Her vision was to encapsulate the essence of tennis – a sport that combines grace, agility, and power – into a tangible form. The result was a sculpture that beautifully represented the dynamics of a tennis player in the midst of a powerful serve, an iconic moment in any tennis match.
Commissioned by Aegon for the Aegon Championship held at the historic Queen’s Club, the trophy was a symbol of excellence and competition. The Queen’s Club, known for its rich history and as a venue that has witnessed some of the most thrilling moments in tennis, was a fitting place for the unveiling of such an exceptional trophy.
Crafted from the finest Sterling Silver, the trophy’s design paid homage to the elegance and precision of tennis. Every curve and line of the sculpture was meticulously thought out, reflecting the fluid motion of a tennis serve. The shimmering surface of the Sterling Silver added a touch of glamour, making the trophy not just a symbol of athletic achievement, but a work of art.
