Ahead of this weekend’s historic Women’s Scottish Cup semi-finals at Hampden Park, the Scottish FA have revealed the brand-new trophy, designed and handcrafted by Thomas Lyte, for the revamped competition.
The vision for the Women’s Scottish Cup was to have a fresh and vibrant look distinct to the women’s competition.
To support this aim, the Scottish FA chose to collaborate with Thomas Lyte, world-renowned goldsmiths and silversmiths, who are behind many of the world’s most famous sporting trophies.
Thomas Lyte made the Emirates FA Cup trophy, the ATP Finals trophies and they have also worked on icons such as The Ryder Cup, the Rugby World Cup and the British Grand Prix trophy. They recently designed and made the Scottish Women’s Premier League trophies and the SWPL’s Sky Sports Cup.
The Scottish FA approached Thomas Lyte to create a trophy concept for the Women’s Scottish Cup inspired by the Mackintosh Rose. The rose – first depicted in a painting by the Scottish artist, Margaret Mackintosh – is prominent in the Women’s Scottish Cup tournament logo. The design also incorporates the thistle which is synonymous with Scotland.
The new trophy will stand proudly alongside the Men’s Scottish Cup, a trophy that is already 150 years old. Both trophies are of similar weight and height, with two handles, a large plinth and a lid with a finial.
The 67cm-tall trophy will be lifted for the first time on Sunday, 28 May when the Women’s Scottish Cup Final takes place at Hampden Park. Rangers take on Motherwell on Saturday in the first Semi-final, with Glasgow City and Celtic facing off on Sunday.
The competition was revamped for this season, marking the latest step in the Scottish FA’s bespoke women’s football strategy, Accelerate Our Game. The strategy launched in 2021, with the vision to harness the power of women’s football, by changing perceptions, and empowering people to inspire the nation, transform lives and build an inclusive, respected and successful game.
