The 2022 edition of the Nitto ATP Finals will once again take place at the Pala Alpitour in Turin, with the excitement at fever pitch for tennis’s end-of-season celebration.
First played for in Japan in 1970, the Nitto ATP Finals bring together the top eight players in singles and doubles men’s tennis. A best of the best showdown pitting the finest players on the planet in direct competition.
This year’s event will include established greats such as Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, alongside some of the brightest young talents in the sport. Stefanos Tsitsipas, the winner of the 2019 tournament, and Casper Rudd, the Norwegian runner-up in both the 2022 US and French Open, among them.
The players will be playing for a prize that we are no strangers to here at Thomas Lyte. Our affiliation with the ATP goes back to 2009, when Thomas Lyte were commissioned to produce a series of sterling silver trophies for both the Nitto ATP Finals and ATP Year-End World Number One champions in both the singles and doubles.
The first anniversary of a new five-year deal between Thomas Lyte and the ATP, will be celebrated shortly after the Turin finals conclude. Given the quality of the players involved, whoever lifts one of the most distinctive prizes in world tennis, will be a worthy winner, having battled through a gruelling season of tennis just to qualify for the end of year showdown.
Standing at 60cms tall, it’s as instantly recognised as any in the sport, with its eight sides representing the eight players, who qualified as the highest ranked players of the year.
The list of winners engraved on the trophy is a reminder of just how prestigious this piece of silverware is, reading like a who’s who of tennis greats. Jimmy Conners, Ivan Lendl, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Boris Becker, Roger Federer and Djokovic have all been crowned Nitto ATP Finals title winners in the past. The absence of a replica of the trophy – lovingly hand-crafted by the master silversmiths at our London fine silver workshops – in Nadal’s full-to-bursting cabinet, remains one of the sport’s great anomalies.
There is some extra spice at this year’s event, with Djokovic within a title win of Federer’s record of six. A victory in Northern Italy would elevate the Serbian to level-pegging with his great Swiss rival.
Regardless of who lifts the trophy, Thomas Lyte are understandably proud of their deep-seated links with the ATP, an organisation that shares many of the values that we also treasure.
When the partnership agreement was signed last winter, Massimo Calvelli, chief executive of the ATP, described Thomas Lyte as “the perfect fit” for the ATP, with Thomas Lyte’s world-class reputation for creating iconic sporting trophies.
As a result, our team play a central role each year in preparing the Nitto ATP Finals and World No.1 trophies to be under the spotlights on court each year at the thrilling climax to the ATP Tour season.
While the singles competition remains the primary drawcard, the doubles competition is no less sought after,
The Nitto ATP Finals doubles trophy, also handcrafted by Thomas Lyte, has been lifted by some of the most iconic pairings in modern tennis, not least the fabled Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, who have won the trophy on no less than four separate occasions. The latter won his fifth title, alongside Jack Sock, in London in 2018.
As tennis lovers from across the world descend on Turin, it’s all to play for once again. One of world tennis’s most striking pieces of silverware is ready and waiting to be hoisted aloft once again. Whether it’s a familiar pair of hands or someone brand new doing the lifting, only time will tell.
One thing, though, is certain. The Nitto ATP Finals will be compelling viewing once again.
