As the world comes together to celebrate Earth Day, it’s a poignant moment to reflect on the steps taken by companies such as Thomas Lyte towards environmental stewardship. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Harshad, our Purchasing Manager, to delve into the company’s sustainability initiatives and practices. From day-to-day operations to overarching goals and collaborative efforts with partners, sustainability is deeply embedded in Thomas Lyte’s ethos. Here’s a closer look at their journey towards a greener future.
Harshad paints a vivid picture of his day-to-day responsibilities at Thomas Lyte. From supplier management to product development, every aspect of his role intertwines with sustainability.
Harshad Joshi: “At Thomas Lyte, sustainability is not an afterthought, but a guiding principle built into the fabric of our operations. Supplier selection is a pivotal aspect where sustainability takes centre stage. We prioritise suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability which involves evaluation criteria beyond quality and price, including environmental and social practices.”
“It is essential here at Thomas Lyte that we set targets and implement initiatives to reduce energy consumption, waste generation, and greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a journey of perpetual enhancement towards a more sustainable future.”
Setting sustainability goals is a vital part of continuous improvement and Harshad highlights these below.
Harshad Joshi: “As part of our objectives, we aim to reduce our carbon footprint by a minimum of 12% annually, with a vision of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.”
“We’ve recently encouraged our employees to drive electrical vehicles outside of work. Choosing EVs for their personal commutes demonstrates their dedication to minimising their environmental impact and supporting the transition to a low carbon-future.”
Harshad Joshi: “As the Purchasing Manager my role is integral to achieving these targets which reflect our commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility as a Royal Warrant Holder for Her Majesty the Queen.”
It is our collaboration with our suppliers that is a key strategy towards sustainable solutions. We work closely with our partners to prioritise sustainable practices throughout our supply chain. This includes traceability of materials, renewable energy adoption, and transitioning to electric vehicles for transportation.”
Moreover, Thomas Lyte’s commitment extends beyond internal operations to collaborative efforts with partners and clients.
Harshad Joshi: “We provide comprehensive care guides and maintenance services, promoting responsible ownership and a ‘Made to Last’ philosophy. By empowering clients to preserve their possessions, as opposed to creating new commissions, they contribute to sustainability and cultural heritage preservation.”
Effective communication is paramount in fostering a culture of sustainability within Thomas Lyte.
Harshad Joshi: “Internal communications, including workshops and certifications, ensure that all our employees are well-informed and actively engaged. We encourage participation in charity initiatives and environmental schemes outside the workplace.”
Harshad Joshi: “One scheme that we participate in is the Hainault Forest Scheme, a tree planting initiative aimed at restoring and preserving local ecosystems. By volunteering our time to plant trees and maintain green spaces, employees contribute to biodiversity conservation and carbon reduction.”
Harshad Joshi: “Several employees have supported the Baton of Hope initiative, where individuals carry a symbolic baton to raise awareness and support for suicide prevention. Last year, six members of our team participated in the final legs of the Baton of Hope relay in London, amplifying our commitment to sustainability and community engagement on a public platform. It was truly fulfilling to witness the Baton of Hope, crafted by Thomas Lyte, being passed along in relays across the country.”
“By working together, we can make meaningful contributions to a more sustainable future.”
As a Royal Warrant Holder as silversmiths and goldsmiths to the Royal Household, it is essential to uphold the core values of sustainability practices.
Harshad Joshi: “Sustainability is a key factor in our submissions for the King’s Royal Warrant, reflecting our commitment to maintain the highest standards of environmental responsibility and ethical conduct.”
“We honour our legacy as a trusted purveyor of fine goods, refurbishment of historic items to the royal household and a trusted supplier to the most prestigious sporting competitions in the world of which exemplifies a dedication to preserving the environment for future generations.”
It is evident that sustainability is not just a buzzword at Thomas Lyte but a core value ingrained in every facet of our operations. From meticulous supplier selection to ambitious carbon reduction goals, their journey towards environmental stewardship is both deliberate and resolute.
As we celebrate Earth Day, we stand as a shining example of how companies can integrate sustainability into their DNA while upholding the highest standards of excellence and integrity. Through collaborative efforts and a steadfast commitment to ‘Made to Last’ philosophy, they pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.
