What is an Apprentice?

A silversmith’s apprentice is a trainee who learns the craft of working with silver under the guidance of a skilled silversmith, or Master. The apprentice gains hands-on experience in the craft of bespoke commissions, and at Thomas Lyte, the art of trophy making. Apprenticeships last several years and involve both practical work and theoretical learning.

Apprenticeships at Thomas Lyte

Through a scheme run by The Goldsmith’s Centre, we offer apprenticeships in various specialised crafting positions under the stewardship of the master craftspeople at our workshops. The program lasts 3-5 years, including 20 days per year at the Goldsmith’s Centre and 2 Networking events. At the end of the Apprenticeship, you will a receive a City and Guild Level 4 qualification.

Can I be an Apprentice?

Apprenticeships are open to any age group. The apprenticeships we have available at Thomas Lyte are in silversmithing and polishing. We accept applications from any part of the country, however you may be required to relocate to within a commutable distance from our workshop. There is a housing subsidy available if you have to relocate.

Are there minimum qualifications needed to be an Apprentice?

You need to have minimum GCSE grades in Maths and English of 4, or relevant experience. Priority consideration will be given to candidates that have already completed, or are in the process of completing, the Goldsmith’s Foundation level course.
