Thomas Lyte were honoured to be commissioned to design and make the Elite Ice Hockey League Championship Trophy. Replacing the former Monteith Bowl, which has been awarded to the league winners since the EIHL’s inception in 2003.
The brief was to create a trophy that is modern in its design, with particular focus on the use of strong lines, and a clean and contemporary appearance, symbolising the robust and dynamic nature of the sport.
Standing at an impressive 60cm in height, the main body of the new trophy was spun by hand and crafted using base metal and silver plate. The interior of the trophy was plated in 24 carat gold, to highlight the success of the winning team.
Through the use of traditional silversmithing techniques, the handles were hand-forged creating a unique ‘V’ shape which adds to the stature and significance of the trophy and is reference to the blades on a pair of ice hockey skates.
The trophy was finished with a bright polish and the EIHL logo is diamond drag engraved on the badge and the silver base. In all, it passed through the hands of six different expert craftsmen and required over 160 hours to complete from start to finish.
The Elite Ice Hockey League was delighted to unveil its new championship trophy which was lifted for the first time by the winners at the end of the 2018/19 Elite League season.
