Thomas Lyte, in collaboration with the Scottish FA, unveiled a brand new trophy in April 2023. The Women’s Scottish Cup sits alongside the 150 year old men’s equivalent, continuing our long association with a sport that has been synonymous with these islands for centuries.
Hampden Park was a suitably grand location for the trophy to be handed to the victor for the first time, with the Old Firm Derby between Celtic and Rangers also providing a fitting fixture for its inaugural outing.
The 2022/23 season was an historic one for the women’s game in Scotland – and Thomas Lyte is immensely proud of the role we played in helping to celebrate the enormous strides taken by the sport. Two new pieces of silverware for Scotland’s top women’s leagues, and the new Sky Sports Trophy, were very much symbols of a brave new era for the sport.
And the Women’s Scottish Cup represents it’s crowning glory. Thomas Lyte and the Scottish FA worked hand-in-hand designing and making the prize – based on a vision of a fresh and vibrant new look for the competition.
Thomas Lyte, the designers and makers of both the Emirates FA Cup and the Women’s FA Cup in England, were approached by the Scottish FA to create a new trophy for the Women’s Scottish Cup inspired by the Mackintosh Rose.
First depicted in a painting by Scottish artist, Margaret Mackintosh, the rose is a prominent feature of a piece of silverware that leans heavily on Scottish symbolism. A thistle is also incorporated into the design of a trophy that sits 67cms high. It’s another illustration of the Scottish FA’s commitment to the sport and the progress made since the launch of their ‘Accelerate Our Game’ strategy in 2021.
Scottish FA chief executive, Ian Maxwell, said: “In collaboration with Thomas Lyte, we set out to create a new trophy for the tournament that embodies the bright future that women’s football has in Scotland. A tremendous amount of work has gone into creating this magnificent trophy and I look forward to seeing it being lifted for the first time by the winning captain in the Scottish Cup Final at the end of May.”
In addition to designing and manufacturing the Women’s Scottish Cup, Thomas Lyte also designed and made trophies for the Scottish Sky Sports Cup and the Scottish Women’s Premier League 1 and 2. In addition, Thomas Lyte designed and made the Emirates FA Cup and Women’s FA Cup trophies in England, and design and supply the winner’s and runner up medals for both competitions. Other FA commissions include the FA Youth Cup trophy and repairing or restoring many of The FA’s other famous pieces, including the Women’s Super League trophy.
