Thomas Lyte were delighted to have been commissioned to restore the British Grand Prix trophy in 2018. The original gold trophy is awarded to the winner of the Formula One race and then returned to the Royal Automobile Club, where it is permanently housed.
This large, ornate trophy is an example of a Victorian, two handled cup. It is thinly covered with hallmarked sterling silver leaf. Little is known of the origins of this trophy and despite much research, the Royal Automobile Club has never been able to establish where it came from.
After being repaired, cleaned and replated, the restored trophy was lifted by former world champion Sebastien Vettel at Silverstone Race Track in July 2018.
